‘Cabinet of Curiosites’ is a group exhibition at the NG Art Gallery, Chippendale, NSW until 15 October, 2011

Nicky Ginsberg, curator and gallerist at NG Art Gallery, and curator Alexandra Sutcliffe invited me to create an artwork for A Cabinet of Curiosities, a group exhibition held at NG Art Gallery in conjunction with the Sydney International Food Festival and The Sydney Morning Herald Food Week.
The artists were invited to respond to the idea of food-related oddities and historical arrangements that challenged how we understand what we consume. In response to this invitation, I created Misty, a music-box assemblage housed in a Circus Nuts tin set inside a fire-alarm box.

The Golden Age, 2011

The Golden Age

This exhibition brings together six artists: Dallas Bray, Rhett Brewer, Allan Chawner, Jo Ernsten, John Turier and me. It explores the concept of the Golden Age, an idea dating back to ancient Greece that describes an idealised time in the past, associated with peace, harmony and prosperity.

My work looks back to childhood, reflecting on the dream-like state that allows a child to effortlessly blur the edges between reality and fantasy. I have vivid memories of playing with my brother under the dining table, where a menagerie of plastic animals roamed and an electric train raced murderously around its track, causing certain death to any hapless animal that wandered into its path.

Interact with my work. Turn a handle or wind a music box, and watch Europa buck astride a bull, King Kong waltz or an astronaut spin for all eternity.
